Service: 4 hours
As a member of Key Club, on November 23, I was privileged with the opportunity to participate in Pomona First Baptist's "Feeding the Needs" Ministry. This benevolent ministry reaches out to the underprivileged and provides them with free clothes and and a free meal. In preparation for the clothing distribution, the volunteers were first instructed to organize and set out all of the donated clothes according to age and gender. During the distribution hour, I helped run the jewelry station. Watching smiles spread across the faces of the women and children when they found a piece of jewelry truly warmed my heart. They were so excited and grateful to receive a necklace, a watch, earrings, etc. Their gratitude and kindness even in their difficult situations humbled me and reminded me to be thankful for my blessings. After the distribution hour was over, the volunteers began to prepare to serve the Thanksgiving meal. Once the guests were all seated, the volunteers passed out the plates of food to all of the families. They were so thankful for their Thanksgiving meal, which is something I take for granted each year. When Thanksgiving rolls around each year, I tend to say "Thank you, God, for my family and my friends" without much thought, as it has become such a routine. This volunteering experience allowed me to pause and rediscover the true meaning of Thanksgiving. It reminded me to be grateful for even simple things such as food and a home. I am truly thankful for this volunteering experience, and I hope to continue serving the community.
