Service: 5.5 Hours
Saturday morning was quite different from my usual Saturdays. Instead of laying in bed into the late hours of the morning, I was up at 8. Instead of measuring how much food I was going to consume (simply metaphoric...trust me, I don't measure my food), I was measuring 0.5 grams of calcium carbonate...nearly exactly.
This Saturday, I had the amazing opportunity of being Thea RIley's lab assistant for her IB Chem internal assessment lab. Upon entering the classroom that I had spent a year in last year, I felt a completely different atmosphere. Everyone there was so concentrated, yet retained a level of mature playfulness. Everyone had their own unique labs, so much of it was fairly independent. This atmosphere is one of the reasons why I regret taking IB Music in leu of IB Chem.
From what I understand, Thea's lab involved studying how much air pressure the reaction between hydrochloric acid and calcium carbonates create. She was studying this reaction with the calcium carbonate in the form of marble chips, finer chips, and powder, each three times for a total of three trials (we did four just to improve the data). It was great overall to be able to help a friend out with her work, and even though it became tedious at times, it was great to experience a bit of the class without actually being enrolled in it.
