The Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast is an annual event hosted by the South Hill Kiwanis. This event was a pretty special event as it was the second event that I participated in as the Vice President of the Charter Oak Key Club. Unfortunately, none of the other officers were able to participate (because of short notice); however, I was able to gather many dedicated Key Clubbers. Some were expected/recruited and others were a huge surprise. Two of my friends (James and Camila) and I worked together in the back row of the whole assembly line of pancakes. What that meant was we were the ones to mix together all of the batter that would be used for the actual pancakes! Believe it or not, it was extremely intimidating at first. The batter was bought in huge amounts, and it initially looked like they had bags of cement sitting there for us. Still, the whole event turned out to be a great success and we had a great turnout of Key Clubbers despite many of our officers being MIA.
Without a doubt, it was very messy and got tough at times. We would occasionally get dirty looks for making the batter too watery or too thick, but it was great to learn the science of perfect pancake batter-making. Providing service to our local community and providing support for service groups, such as the Kiwanis, is a great privilege and and opportunity that I really relished. This gave me great hope for this coming year's Key Club. ...Not to mention we got free breakfast!
